CANOEING

CILT ACTIVITY SPECIALISATION REQUIREMENTS

Just a few friendly reminders…

You need to develop a binder for each specialisation.  There are no set guidelines for this; you need to do something that will be efficient and create a store of information to use (or even take with you) whenever you are involved with this activity in the future.  In your binder, you should keep track of everything you do!

You need to be an expert in this activity.  Doing as much as possible in this activity is the best plan; here is a list of items to do to guide you.  You are required to complete all of the following (except the section marked extras) to satisfy the specialisation requirements.  However, the more you do, the better!

Finally, you will need to be checked off on each of the requirements. ‘Skills’ work will need to be checked off by a knowledgeable member of the camp staff, or someone approved by the CILT instructor.  The rest will be checked off along with your CILT file during your time at camp.

Safety

  1. Know the canoeing safety rules from memory and practice them.

Knowledge

  1. Have clear and useful definitions of the following terms (and understand them!)

Bow

Stern

Keel

Grip (handle)

Gunwales

Thwarts

Throat

Shaft

Tip

Blade

  1. Have clear and useful directions for the following tasks in (and understand them!)

Proper use of a lifejacket and the importance of wearing one.

Reach and throw techniques.

How to choose the correct length paddle.

How to enter and launch a canoe.

How to capsize a canoe, reenter a swamped canoe, hand paddle to shore, and empty a canoe in shallow water.

How to keep a canoe stable when exchanging positions with other canoeists.

How to perform the basic paddling strokes (see also ‘skills’)

  1. Read Proverbs 13:14 and Proverbs 15:31-32.  One component of obedience is knowing what your leaders expect from you.  List 3 important rules for canoeing.  Demonstrate 3 strokes you learned.  How will you be rewarded for obeying these rules and guidelines?  Often it is not an authority who rewards our obedience; sometimes we reward ourselves by becoming better people and by being successful!

  1. Contact relevant organisations (suggestions below) or consult their websites for more information about canoeing.  It is good to know more about canoeing than just what happens at camp.

Skills

  1. Practice canoeing sufficiently so as to be able to..

Demonstrate the different paddling stokes (for both the bowman and the sternman).

With a partner, paddling only on the side you started on, paddle tandem 25 yards in a straight course.

With no assistance, launch a canoe, paddle solo 25 yards, turn canoe around, paddle back, and dock canoe.

  1. Obtain and maintain current CPR certification.

  1. Have a clear understanding of the different paddling strokes (for both the bowman and the sternman), and be able to demonstrate them.

Leadership

1.       Collect ‘tools’ that will help you to lead this activity.  This will include at least…

5 games that can be played safely in canoes that encourage campers to learn techniques of canoeing.

5 creative ways to teach campers the rules and procedures of canoeing.

Techniques of keeping track of all of your campers while leading a canoeing class.

2.       Develop a 5 day lesson plan for canoeing that could be used at camp.   Include as much detail as possible, and be creative!

3.       Assisting in teaching canoeing for a week at camp.
