CILT ACTIVITY SPECIALISATION REQUIREMENTS

Just a few friendly reminders…

You need to develop a binder for each specialisation.  There are no set guidelines for this; you need to do something that will be efficient and create a store of information to use (or even take with you) whenever you are involved with this activity in the future.  In your binder, you should keep track of everything you do!

You need to be an expert in this activity.  Doing as much as possible is the best plan.  You are required to complete all of the following to satisfy the specialisation requirements, however the more you do, the better!

Finally, you will need to be checked off on each of the requirements. ‘Skills’ work will need to be checked off by a knowledgeable member of the camp staff, or someone approved by a CILT instructor.  The rest will be checked off along with your CILT file during your time at camp.

Safety

  1. Know safety rules for nature activities, and practice them.

Knowledge

  1. Have clear and useful definitions of the following terms (and understand them!)

Ecology

Renewable resources

Non-renewable resources

Erosion

Conservation

  1. Have clear and useful directions for the following (and understand them!)

How to identify 5 types of rocks

How to identify 5 birds by sight and 5 by their birdcalls

How to identify different weather signs and the three main types of clouds.

How to identify constellations present in the summer sky.

How to identify animals common to our camp locality and evidence of them.

How to identify 10 trees and shrubs in the area of the camp.

How to identify 6 different wildflowers.

How to identify any poisonous plants common to camp.

  1. Hebrew 11:3.  A big part of faith is believing God made the world and has a plan for it.  Read Psalm 8, and praise God for his marvellous creation.  How can we be good stewards of God's creation?

  1. Contact relevant organisations (suggestions below) or consult their websites for more information about crafts.  It is good to know about more than just what happens at camp.

Skills

  1. In order to learn more about nature, complete one of the following projects

Make a terrarium, and observe the activity you see.

Build an ant farm and describe the activity you see.

Make a bird feeder, and describe the activity you see.

Make an ecology banner for an activity area.

Create ‘wanted alive’ posters for animals around camp.  Include as much information as possible about the animals.

Prepare a lesson about clouds and weather to present to a group of campers.

Help run an aluminium can or other recycling project.

Make a weather vane and record the weather for 2 weeks.

A project at your suggestion, approved by a CILT instructor

Leadership

1.       Collect ‘tools’ that will help you to lead this activity.  This will include at least…

Directions to at least 10 nature games

Directions to at least 10 nature crafts

Directions to 5 activities that could be done with a nature class.

2.       Develop a 5 day lesson plan for nature that could be used at camp.  Be creative!

3.       Assist in teaching nature for a week at camp.
